Water as the life-giving force of the Spirit works in the goodness of the creation and then vanquishes evil through the sacrament of baptism. Hildegard develops this theme in Homily 34. Commenting on John 3.1–15, the magistra brings together the waters of Genesis, the Gospel pericope and the sacrament of baptism when she asserts that the human being, dried out from sin, is revived by the water of the Holy Spirit in baptism (Kienzle 2011: 141).

In the Book of Divine Works, when Hildegard relays God’s words about endowing humans with the ability to choose between good and evil, she extends that capacity to explain the human governance of creation:

When I, God, fashion the human with good behaviour at the beginning of his creation, I create the living knowledge of good and evil in him, clearly so that he may avoid evil and imitate me, his Father, in the good. I gave him in my likeness the discretion between good and evil so that with that knowledge he may discern all the creatures and knowing them, he may have power over them after me.10
